CAUSE AND CURE OF PROBLEMS

I would like to thank Dee Dean of the Alpine Herald for the opportunity to talk with you on a weekly basis. I have a number of ideas for this column for the upcoming weeks. Topics that I think many of us have questions about from time to time and wonder if there are really any answers. Such things as: what is truth, why are things the way they are today, what is the purpose of life and many others. I will be answering these from God’s word the Bible. The Bible though written thousands of years ago is very relative to our day. It held the answers to life’s questions thousands of years ago and has the answers to life’s questions today. The reason for this is two fold. First, because God and His word never change. Second, the root cause of the problems that we are suffering from today are the same that mankind has suffered from the beginning of time.

In this article I feel compelled to address the events of the past few weeks. There has been no shortage of opinion given for the cause and cure for our present tragedies. Though I have not heard and read all that have been offered those I have heard deal with the symptoms rather the real cause and a temporary fix rather than the cure.

Some of the reasons that have been given for the recent tragedies include: lack of gun control, poor parenting, the breakdown of the home and family, the lack of respect for people and life itself etc… the list goes on and on. No doubt you have your opinion as well. The answers offered for the cure has ranged from tighter gun control to that which Gov. Davis said "from a practical standpoint, you have to give schools the option of installing, if they choose, cameras, fences, and metal detectors." As I read his response I thought, "what are we talking about here penitentiaries or schools?

All of these suggestions though given in sincerity and show concern, miss the mark. They do not address the cause and cure. I would like to give what God’s Word, the Bible says is the root of the problem as well as the cure that will last. If you live in a house with any kind of yard you realize that the recent rains have enabled the weeds to sprout up and invade our yards. You also know that unless the root of the weeds is completely removed the weeds will return again and again, so too with the current problems that we are facing. The Bible gives us the reasons for our current state of affairs. In the Old Testament book of Hosea 8:7 "For they have sown the wind and they shall reap the whirlwind" then in the New Testament book of Galatians 6:7-8 "Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he reap. For he that sows to his flesh shall reap corruption; but he that sows to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap eternal life."

For many years now we as a society have turned our backs on God. We have told Him we don’t want Him in our schools, our government, our homes, or our personal lives. And in a sense He has obliged us. He has allowed us to have it our way and thus the disastrous results. We have taught our children by way of evolution that they are merely a highly evolved animal then we are shocked when they act like animals. We have encouraged our young people to "explore" their sexual desires and identity then we are shocked that at the number of teens that become infected with an array of sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies. My generation touted free sex, drug and alcohol use, and rejection of authority, which led to selfishness, rebellion, and a lack of committing ones self to anything but ones own desires and wants. Broken homes and "blended families now outnumber families that remain together for life. We truly have sown the wind and are reaping the whirlwind. We have sown to the flesh (our lusts and desires) and are now reaping corruption.

Fortunately the Bible not only clearly reveals the root of the problem it also directs us to the cure. The apostle Paul put it this way in the Book of Acts 14:15 "…we also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that you should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made the heaven, the earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein."" God not only has the answer He is the answer. He is calling us to Himself. Our sins though it may involve others are ultimately against Him. And we must come to Him on His terms. If we will do this He will hear us, turn to us, and come into our lives, our homes, families and society. God reveals Himself through the His Son Jesus Christ. In Him and Him alone is their hope. Unless you (the reader) and I (the writer of this article) come to grips with what God has to say in His Word, repent, forsake our sin, and turn to God with a whole heart not only will these tragedies continue, they will get much worse. The Bible warns of this also. It starts with you and with me. I beg you by the mercies of God be reconciled to God.

God’s love and His power to change anyone’s life is great. No matter how bad your situation may be God is able and desirous of working in it to change it if you are willing.
