Who is this Jesus? (Part 3)

Greetings precious people, I hope all is well with you. In todayís article I would like for us to continue looking at who Jesus is. In past weeks we considered the various views and ideas people and religions have of who Jesus is. We also looked at what the Bible, Godís Word, has to say about who Jesus is. We saw that Jesus was accused by His enemies and confirmed by the Bible to be a friend of sinners of which I am very thankful.

In todayís article, I would like for us to consider who Jesus is from a similar direction. Specifically, the names and titles of Jesus. In a past study we saw that term Jesus Christ the Lord is not His first, middle, and last lame. Rather, Jesus is His name, Christ is what He is, Savior and Lord is who He is, He is God. The Bible, Godís Word offers a number of names to describe the character of Jesus Christ.

As you may already know, there is a lot that can be known from a name or title. A name like Johnson means son of John, Benson son of Ben and so on. The title "CEO" or "President" lets us know the position of the person. Often a person is known by his or her name or title. If a person is honest and trustworthy, when their name or title is mentioned amongst a group of people, the group will generally have a good opinion of that person and good things to say. But if the person is a liar, dishonest, and not trustworthy, then that person when mentioned by name will be in disdain.

Lets take a look at a few of the names and titles the Bible attributes to Jesus. In the Book of Revelation we see the following names and titles being attributed to Jesus. In Revelation 1:5, "And from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood." Revelation 19:11-16, "Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS." Revelation 21:6,

"And He said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts." Revelation 22:13, "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last." Revelation 22:16, "I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star."

Then in Isaiah 9:6, "For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." Isaiah 7:14, "Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel." Matthew 1:22-23, "So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: "Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which is translated, "God with us."

The Gospel of John attributes many names and titles to Jesus. In John 1:9, "That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world." John 1:36, "And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, "Behold the Lamb of God!" John 1:41, "He first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated, the Christ)" John 5:25, "Most assuredly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live." John 6:35, "And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst." John 6:51, "I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world." John 10:7, "Then Jesus said to them again, "Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep." John 10:8-9, "I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture." John 10:11, "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep." John 11:25, "Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live." John 12:13, "They took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, and cried out:

"Hosanna! 'Blessed is He who comes in the name of the LORD!' The King of Israel!"

John 14:6, "Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." John 20:16, "Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to Him, "Rabboni!" (which is to say, Teacher)." John 20:28, "And Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!"

One might wonder why the Bible attributes so many different names and titles to Jesus. The answer is simple. Because of Who He is and What He is, one name, one title cannot adequately describe Him. The previously mentioned names and titles are but a few that are used to describe the character of God.

One of the most profound names that Jesus uses to describe Himself is found in John 8:58, "Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM." This name "I AM" may seem rather strange to most. It doesnít seem to have any signifigance one may think. But it is extremely significant. The religious leaders that were around Jesus when He made this proclamation knew exactly what He was saying. You could see it in their reaction to His statement. In John 8:59, "Then they took up stones to throw at Him."

These religious leaders that were present knew exactly what Jesus was laying claim to by using this title for Himself. For you see, it was a title that God used to describe Himself to Moses in Exodus 3:13-14, we read, "Then Moses said to God, "Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they say to me, 'What is His name?' what shall I say to them?" And God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And He said, "Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.' "

He does not say I was or I will be, rather "I AM" which means the "Ever Existing One". He is now and ever will be. What is your need? He is the one that is able to fill and satisfy that need. He, Jesus is all that you will ever need. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He is the One who satisfies the longing soul. He is the Good Shepherd, the Resurrection and the life. He is the One that gives life and the one that takes it away.

Acts 4:12 declares, "Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name (but Jesus) under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." Only Jesus Christ the Lord can save a person from the penalty of sin, which is death, Hell. Neither Mohamed, Buddha, Confucius, Joseph Smith, the Watchtower Society, the Pope, good works nor all the money in the world can grant forgiveness of sin and free one from the penalty of sin. Salvation comes only by faith in Jesus Christ. In Who He is and what He has done for you.

Dear precious reader, do you know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? Do you know Him to be all that you will ever need? He can and will be, but only at your invitation. Confess your sin to Him now, repent of your sin, and place your faith in Jesus Christ the Lord.

Next time we will continue to look at who Jesus is according to Scripture, specifically the reason for which people reject the fact that Jesus Christ is all that the Bible purports Him to be. Until then, may the Lord richly bless you beloved of the Lord.
